What is Wing Chun?
Wing Chun is a Chinese martial art and form of self-defense utilizing both striking and grappling
while specialising in close-range combat. Wing Chun techniques are uncommitted. This means
that if the technique fails to connect, the student is able to "flow" easily into a follow-up attack.
For example if a punch is not a successful strike, once contact between arms occurs the
well known sticky-hand fighting techniques can be employed.
What is Chi Sau?
The arms are moved in motions involving some movements known as Tan Sau, Dai Sau, Fook
Sau and Bong Sau. The arms are constantly repositioned while searching for or creating an
opening in the opponent’s defence so that the Wing Chun techniques may strike through.
The aim is to learn about the partners sensitivity and movement and using this to expose an
opening. By practicing in this manner chi sau becomes a learning exercise and not a
competition.
Does Wing Chun have Kicks?
Wing chun kuen contains numerous kicking techniques. Wing chun kuen kicks are usualy never
applied above the heightof a practitioners own waist. In application, wing chun kuen kicks are
used directly and explosively to break an opponent's structure and destroy their ability to
continue an encounter. Some kick may attack the post while other kicks can attack the
opponent kick or you could attack the centre line.
What is the Centreline?
Simply, it is an imaginary line that runs vertically through the center of the practitioner.
The reason we have talk about a centerline is to give the Wing Chun partitioner, an idea
of what they should attack and defend.
